Examine a Place

The Examine a Place project is a collaboration between DWP Digital, Department for Education (DfE), HMRC and the Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS). The project’s aim was to help strengthen and build the labour market across the country by providing on-demand accessible, real time data that could be used for individuals, government, organisations and employers.

The services aimed to use data to give a snapshot of skills and roles and a view of employer demand for areas across the country. This would allow individuals to understand what transferrable skills they had to move into new roles, and allow educational institutions to train students in skills needed for the future.

The first phase of the project involved developing a prototype that used online job vacancy data to help users explore:

  • Skills with the highest employer demand

  • Roles with the highest employer demand

  • Changes in employer demand

The prototype was tested with a group of users and feedback was used to improve the design of the service.

The Examine a Place project is a valuable example of how data can be used to help people make informed decisions about their careers.

Here are some of the benefits of the Examine a Place project:

  • Helps job seekers find jobs that match their skills and interests.

  • Helps employers find the right skills and talent for their businesses.

  • Provides policymakers with data to help them make decisions about education, training, and employment.

The Examine a Place project is a significant step forward in the use of data to help people make informed decisions about their lives. The service has the potential to make a real difference to the lives of job seekers, employers, and policymakers.
